Akron's ACCESS homeless shelter names new executive director

Apr 04th, 2019

AKRON, Ohio – After serving as ACCESS homeless shelter’s acting interim executive director since February, Jackie Hemsworth will continue to lead the agency as its next executive director.

Hemsworth has been with ACCESS, the Akron shelter for homeless women and children, for four years and has more than 15 years of experience in providing services to people experiencing homelessness, the shelter said in a news release.

She is taking over the post that was held for more than 10 years by Lynn Budnick, who died Feb. 13 after a long battle with cancer.

In Hemsworth’s previous role as ACCESS director of advancement, she was responsible for overseeing fundraising efforts, federal and local grants, events and private donations. Before joining ACCESS, she provided direct services to the homeless and managed supportive housing programs in Summit County.

“I believe strongly in the mission of ACCESS to empower homeless women to take control of their futures,” Hemsworth said in a statement. “I look forward to working with our incredible team as we support ACCESS families and women with the time and opportunities they need to start their next chapter.”

More than 20,000 women and children have been served by ACCESS since 1984, the shelter said. The staff provide housing as well as programming to develop self-esteem and work on self-sufficiency.
